Adoptions From The Heart (AFTH), founded in 1985 by Maxine Chalker, MSW, LSW, is a licensed, non-profit, full-service adoption agency licensed in PA, NJ, DE, VA, CT and NY. Chalker is an adoptee herself and brings her experience and understanding to clients of the organization. Her experience through closed adoption drove her to create AFTH which, at the time, was one of the first open adoption agencies on the East Coast.

Since 1985, the mission of Adoptions From The Heart has been to provide safe and loving homes for children and offer quality, comprehensive services to families, birth parents and children. Through educational, counseling and support programs, we help strengthen families, support expecting and birth parents and educate the community. The agency's mission also extends out into the community at large by providing financial support to families and children in need and helping to educate the public by providing trainings to hospitals, clinics, schools and social workers. Adoptions From The Heart is also very active in continuing to help draft and propose legislation in various states that will positively impact the adoption and child welfare system.

Adoptions From The Heart places children born in the United States with adoptive families through open adoption. With open adoption, pregnant women get to choose the family for their baby by looking at a family’s profile, watching a video and even getting to meet them in person. This past year, AFTH revised our “Minimum Openness Policy.” In addition to sending pictures and letters once a month for the first six months and once a year after, families must also be open to a minimum of one visit per year. This new policy reflects our focus on the benefits of open adoption for all those in the adoption triad.

Infants of all races are placed through the domestic program. The agency’s Out of Area Domestic Program accepts applications from couples and singles from all over the country. In addition to our domestic adoption program, AFTH also provides services in Private Adoption Assistance, Home Studies, Required Educational Courses, Educational Series education on more than just the required topics, and services to assist families pursuing international adoption.

Outside of adoption placements and assistance, AFTH puts forth strong efforts in helping those touched by adoption who may be in need. Events such as our Annual Family Picnic, Find Her Footing 5K, gift-card drives, Paper Heart Project, and other efforts all go towards raising funds for our Expecting and Birth Parent Support Fund and our Birth Parent Scholarship Fund.
